Dear Residents:

On behalf of the Babylon Board of Education and the Babylon educational team, we are pleased to present the proposed 2017/2018 district budget. The mission from the very onset of the budget planning process was to craft a fiscally-sound, tax-levy compliant spending plan for our residents that equally positions Babylon students in continuing to receive a world-class education.

The adopted 2017/2018 budget carries a budget-to-budget increase of 2.99 percent and an allowable tax levy-compliant increase of 3.66 percent. Due to prudent fiscal management and ongoing oversight, the district recently earned another upgrade to our previous excellent credit rating and is consistently recognized by the New York State Comptroller’s Office as a district in strong fiscal health.

The proposed 2017/2018 budget represents an educational plan that brings Babylon Schools to a whole new level. The 2017/2018 district budget is one of the most instructionally robust budgets ever presented to our community with an eye toward sustaining our future. As we move full speed ahead with setting the stage for sustainability, we recognize the need to continue down a path of progressive education that defines the district, and in turn, the Babylon community and the value of our homes.

The proposed 2017/2018 budget introduces a multi-year roll out of a 1:1 world computing initiative that will further distinguish our district as an innovator in the educational field. It introduces the installation of new interior and exterior security cameras districtwide that will enhance safety and supervision. Moreover, it contains programs that advance our newly-implemented high school engineering pathway (Project Lead the Way), our robust scientific research program, college and career planning services, and our commitment to the best research-based literacy instruction, cultural arts and social/emotional learning.

It is a spending plan that also continues to support the many philosophies, programs and services that the Babylon community has come to value throughout the years. These include full day kindergarten, small class sizes, dynamic K-12 music and art programs, many co-curricular experiences outside of the school day as well as a wide array of athletic teams to support physical health and sportsman-like competition.

We encourage you to participate in the annual School Budget Vote and Trustee Election, which will be held on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Babylon Memorial Grade School. More information on the proposed budget can also be found on our website at www.babylonschools.org.

In closing, our school district sits on a very solid foundation. Now more than ever we are well-positioned to become a premier school district within New York State based on the traditions of our past, wonderful community support of our schools, and a spirit of innovation based on our vision for the future. Thank you for allowing me to serve as Superintendent of Schools. It is my honor and privilege to work with our wonderful students, families, staff and the greater Babylon community.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Linda J. Rozzi
Superintendent of Schools
